HISTORY: Devil’s Claw is native to South Africa and East Africa. It is an herbaceous perennial, growing to 1.5m or 5 ft. in length, whose brilliant ‘devil’ red/purple flowers and woody barbed, claw-like fruit are credited for its descriptive name. Since Devil’s Claw is considered to be a ‘bitter tonic’ it may be of help in the management of various gastrointestinal complaints including dyspepsia and digestive upsets.
